Stephen Gordon is the Director of the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme of Clinical Tropical Research (MLW).  He was educated at the University of Cambridge and trained in General Medicine in Oxford, Zambia and Belfast.  He specialised in Respiratory Medicine in Sheffield (Clinical Lecturer) and completed Wellcome Trust Training and Career Development Fellowships studying susceptibility to pulmonary infections in Malawi.

He has made several contributions in Experimental Medicine and has developed research bronchoscopy in Sheffield, Liverpool and Malawi for several major studies including inhaled and injected vaccine studies. His research over the last five years has focused on pulmonary infection with three clear themes; Humoral and Cellular mucosal protective responses to pneumococcal antigen exposure particularly using an experimental human pneumococcal carriage model; Adverse effects to household air pollution, lung redox and infection; and Macrophage defence of the lung including augmented passive immunotherapy and efferocytosis.
