Prof Heather Zar selected as a 2018 L'Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science Laureate

Prof Heather Zar, President of PATS, has been selected to receive the 2018 L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award in life sciences on 22 March 2018 in Paris.

Prof Zar was named the Laureate for the Africa and Arab States region, and is one of five outstanding women scientists selected from around the world to receive the 2018 Award.  The L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Awards recognizes women who are still under-represented in various fields, including science, by celebrating five exceptional female researchers every year in a drive to promote equality between women and men in science.

Prof Zar was cited “For establishing a cutting-edge research program in pneumonia, tuberculosis and asthma, saving the lives of many children worldwide.”  This is in recognition of her work focused on child lung health, which encompasses training, clinical care, advocacy, and research including the Drakenstein child health study which investigates the early life determinants of child health and chronic disease.
