Pan African Thoracic Society Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research (PATS MECOR) 2022

A Research Training Course for Health Professionals in Africa

The PATS MECOR 2022 course was held at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel, Durban, South Africa from 24 to 28 October 2022.

PATS MECOR students from numerous African countries received training and assistance in research methodology, initiation of research projects and publication.  Teaching sessions were very interactive with students encourage to actively engage with the material, their teachers and each other.

During the week, students  in Levels 1, 2 and 3 worked individually to develop research projects. Faculty members were always on hand to mentor and guide students on the projects.  On the last day of the course, students had the opportunity to present their research projects, successfully showcasing all they had learned during the week.

Other training workshops were held pre-course and during the week.  These included training in Spirometry and Biostatistician skills training.  Seminar sessions were held each morning covering various topics such as publishing in journals.

We gratefully acknowledge support from  The International Multidisciplinary Programme to Address Lung Health and TB in Africa (IMPALA); The American Thoracic Society; and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as well as the generous donations from an anonymous donor and The Aldama Foundation.  We are also very grateful to our faculty who tirelessly share their knowledge and mentor and guide students in order to increase research capacity on the continent.
