PATS/ATS Women’s Leadership Program Report (2025)

The Pan African Thoracic Society (PATS), in collaboration with the American Thoracic Society (ATS), successfully hosted the Women’s Leadership Program in 2025. This initiative forms part of PATS’ ongoing commitment to empowering women in respiratory health across Africa.

The program was held on the 5th and 6th of September 2025 at the PrideInn Azure Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. This marked the second cohort of the program, with many more cohorts planned for the future as part of a long-term vision to strengthen female leadership within the field.

The 2025 cohort consisted of five outstanding women professionals: Adaeze Ayuk, Aishat Ashitu, Sbekezelo Hlophe, Odette Kibu, and Leah Ferguson. These participants were selected based on their leadership potential and commitment to advancing respiratory health in their respective regions.

The program was facilitated by Susan Banda, who served as the leadership coach. The training began with one-on-one introductory sessions, allowing participants to engage personally, identify their leadership goals, and establish a foundation for mentorship.

Following the in-person workshop, the program continued with structured online meetings throughout the year. These sessions provided ongoing mentorship, accountability, and leadership development support. Susan Banda also designed and facilitated a range of practical activities aimed at strengthening leadership skills, communication, and professional growth.

This blended approach of in-person engagement and continued virtual interaction ensured sustained impact and meaningful development for all participants.

The Women’s Leadership Program is a key initiative aligned with PATS’ mission to promote inclusivity and gender equity in healthcare leadership. By investing in women leaders, PATS continues to contribute to building a stronger, more representative respiratory health community across Africa.

Special thanks are extended to Sonia Buist, the core founder of this impactful program, whose vision and dedication have made this initiative possible.
