Congratulations to Professor Refiloe Masekela for her featured in this week’s @TheLancet

PATS is happy to celebrate Professor Refiloe Masekela, Immediate Past President, who has been featured in a profile in The Lancet (Vol 407, April 18, 2026).

Professor Masekela, Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and faculty member at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in Durban, South Africa, has dedicated her career to improving lung health for children across the African continent from her early work in paediatric HIV care to her current research on asthma, chronic lung disease, and the impact of climate on respiratory health.

The profile highlights her tireless advocacy for equitable access to inhaled medicines, her collaboration with WHO on affordable asthma guidelines, her leadership of the MECOR training programme through PATS, and her commitment to building the next generation of African research leaders with a special focus on women in science.

PATS is proud to have been led by a clinician-researcher of Prof Masekela’s calibre, and we look forward to her continued contributions to respiratory health across Africa and beyond.
