PAN AFRICAN THORACIC SOCIETY METHODS IN EPIDEMIOLOGIC, CLINICAL AND OPERATIONS RESEARCH (PATS MECOR) 2019
The PATS MECOR 2019 course was held at the White Sands Resort and Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from 10 to 14 June 2019. The course was held in conjunction with the The International Multidisciplinary Programme to Address Lung Health and TB in Africa (IMPALA) meeting at the same venue.
PATS MECOR students from numerous African countries received training and assistance in research methodology, initiation of research projects and publication. Teaching sessions were very interactive with students encourage to actively engage with the material, their teachers and each other.
During the week, students in Level 1 worked in small groups while students in Levels 2 and 3 worked individually to develop research projects. Faculty members were always on hand to mentor and guide students on the projects. On the last day of the course, students had the opportunity to present their research projects, successfully showcasing all they had learned during the week.
Other training workshops were held pre-course and during the week. These included training in Spirometry; Air Quality Monitoring (where several participants received monitors to take home as part of a project to gather continuous air pollution data in African cities); a Smoke Cessation workshop and Biostatistician skills training. Seminar sessions were held each morning and we had the pleasure of hosting a deputy editor from The Lancet who discussed publishing with the students.
